Youth Unemployment Crisis; 10 Indian states top the list

Kerala, which has the highest literacy rate among Indian states, is struggling with a youth unemployment rate of 29.9%.

Digital Desk: Despite economic growth, the unemployment rate in India seems to have been stuck at alarming levels. The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 's recent report highlights a concerning stagnation in India's unemployment rate, particularly in the youth sector.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), India is to surpass Japan and become the fourth-largest economy globally by 2025. On the flip side, the PLFS suggests that the country is struggling with a youth unemployment rate of 10.2% for 2023-2024. The rate of youth unemployment among males is 9.8% while females suffer a higher rate of 11%. It's concerning as women's unemployment rate has increased from 2.9% to 3.2% in the past year.

The drastic contrast drawn from the overall economic growth and the critical condition of the Indian Labour market highlights the negligence towards job creation, specifically in some of the Union Territories and states of India.

Lakshadweep, the Union Territory tops the list with a 36.2% rate of unemployment which stands for an unemployment rate of 79.7% for females, compared to 26.2% for males. Similarly, Andaman & Nicobar Island also suffers due to youth unemployment issues at a rate of 33.6% with significantly high unemployment of females with 49.5% of women to 24% of males. The stark difference shows the gender disparity in the Union Territories underlining the urgent need to focus on women's employment issues.

Kerala, which has the highest literacy rate among Indian states, is struggling with a youth unemployment rate of 29.9%. Following Kerala are Nagaland and Manipur from the Northeast with unemployment rates of 27.4% and 22.9% respectively. The list continues with the following states and their respective unemployment rates: Ladakh at 22.2%, Arunachal Pradesh at 20.9%, Goa at 19.1%, Punjab at 18.8%, and Andhra Pradesh at 17.5%.  Keeping in mind the records, the government and private sector must address these issues collectively.
