The CM visited the construction site of the new Secretariat at Umsawli
Digital Desk: The Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma undertook a comprehensive review of major infrastructure and new townships at New Shillong City and its periphery with a focus on urban development, planning and urban regeneration efforts.
The CM paid a visit to the construction site of the new Secretariat at Umsawli, under construction at a capital cost of ₹1188 crore. The phase commenced on the twenty-first of January 2025, and the construction will be complete by mid-2027. He stated that the new Secretariat would be efficient in governance, with features that incorporate sustainability, culture and contemporary architectural designs. Sangma pointed out that this existing structure will be ideal for an active administration.
He also stressed that the project will help decongest traffic in Shillong city and pointed out that though some of the internal roads within the township are done, some are still under construction. These roads will provide a means of transportation within and along the Administrative and Knowledge City and are proposed to connect all the proposed projects and therefore improve transport arteries to Shillong.
The CM further toured the progressive construction of Unity Mall, and also assessed the Ummir to Mawkhanu Road, which leads to the township. He also considered the Avenue Plantation proposal or the suggestion to make the place more eye-catching.
Earlier, Sangma went to the Polo Mall, which is a part of Smart City, involving both commercial and entertainment purposes, along with the food court. The process of giving out spaces within shops is still continuing.
He also visited the Wahumkhrah Riverfront Development Project, regarding which the Government plans to restore ecology and beautification in relation to the National Games. Phase one will focus on the construction of the canal, bridges, roads, sewerage and drainage system, and lastly cleaning of the river and its surroundings, while phase two will involve the establishment of shops, restaurants, hostels, among others.
In a call for public support, he said, “Together we shall get to ensure that we have clean and lively rivers.”
