Digital Desk: The political arena in India is set for a heated showdown as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is poised to spearhead the no-confidence motion debate against the Narendra Modi government in the Lok Sabha today. As Parliament resumes at 11 a.m. for the second day of the no-confidence motion, expectations are high for a lively and intense 16-hour debate that is projected to extend till Thursday, August 10, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to give his reply.
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury confirmed on Wednesday that Rahul Gandhi would lead the Opposition's charge during the debate, effectively positioning the Congress party as the torchbearer of discontent and criticism against the Modi government's policies and actions.
The opening salvo of this no-confidence motion was fired by Congress Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday. Gogoi stated that the Opposition brought forth this motion in solidarity with the people of Manipur, signaling their concerns and grievances over the government's handling of the situation in the state.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to deliver his response to the no-confidence motion on Thursday, and all eyes are on his address as he seeks to defend his government's track record and actions.
In a parallel development in the Rajya Sabha, the government is set to table the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023, along with five other bills. Amidst these legislative proceedings, tensions escalated on Tuesday when the Opposition alliance INDIA moved a privilege motion against Leader of the House Piyush Goyal. The motion was triggered by Goyal allegedly referring to some Opposition members as "traitors."
The General Secretary in charge of Communications for the Congress party took to social media to assert that nothing short of a formal apology from Goyal on the floor of the House would suffice in addressing the issue.
Meanwhile, the INDIA bloc staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the day. The walkout was attributed to the Central government's reluctance to engage in an immediate discussion on the Manipur violence issue, which the Opposition had proposed through a mutually negotiated motion. The rationale for the walkout was conveyed by an official statement made by an I.N.D.I.A bloc spokesperson.
Simultaneously, during the no-confidence motion debate in the Lok Sabha, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey asserted the Prime Minister's perspective. Dubey emphasized that the government perceives this motion as a 'trust in Opposition' vote rather than a traditional 'no-trust' vote. He added that the government is keen to observe which parties stand in support of the Opposition's contentions.
As the Parliamentary proceedings continue, the nation remains engaged in these significant political developments that underscore the democratic process and the fervor of debate that characterizes the Indian political landscape.
