Digital Desk: Rashtriya Janata Dal president Lalu Prasad Yadav asserted on Tuesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi got to unfurl the tricolor at the Red Fort in Delhi for the last time.
Yadav was speaking to reporters after celebrating Independence Day at his wife Rabri Devi's residence. During the celebration, the two former Bihar chief ministers unfurled the national flag.
"On this occasion, I greet the people of the country and pay tribute to great men like Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, whose contributions the nation will never forget," Yadav told reporters.
The ailing septuagenarian, who has been staunchly opposed to the BJP throughout his political career, was asked in an upbeat tone by some journalists whether PM Modi would be able to hoist the tricolor from the Red Fort next year when Independence Day would fall well after the Lok Sabha elections.
"Nahin, na" (no, not at all), said the RJD chief, who is on bail after being convicted in fodder fraud cases and blames the BJP for his legal problems.
When pressed further, the once gregarious politician, who now appears weathered by old age and illness, stated, "This is his last time."
Some journalists questioned what he saw as the scenario for next year.
The astute politician, who is barred from running in elections but was instrumental in the formation of the opposition coalition INDIA, commented, "Next time, it will be our turn (agli baar hum log aayenge)."
