Digital Desk: In a major political development, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is set to make a significant return to the high-stakes political arena by contesting from the prestigious Amethi constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the party’s newly appointed Uttar Pradesh chief Ajay Rai said on Friday.
The revelation comes after Congress experienced a setback in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, where Rahul Gandhi suffered the unexpected loss of Amethi, a constituency he had represented with dedication for a remarkable 15 years. The seat was seized by BJP leader and Union minister Smriti Irani, marking a historic shift in the political landscape of the region. Reflecting on his defeat, Gandhi attributed his loss to the lack of connection between local leaders and the electorate, as conveyed by party insiders.
Gandhi had previously held the Amethi seat with considerable influence and popularity, yet in a surprising turn of events, he faced a defeat by a margin of over 52,000 votes. Taking full responsibility for the Congress party's less-than-desired performance, Rahul Gandhi also took the momentous step of resigning from his position as the party president. This move led to introspection within the Congress ranks and further reshuffling of key roles within the party.

Currently, Rahul Gandhi holds the position of Lok Sabha MP from Kerala's Wayanad constituency, maintaining his presence in the Parliament and contributing to discussions on a wide range of issues.
In another intriguing twist, the Congress party's general secretary, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has been rumored to be considering a move to the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency for the upcoming elections. Varanasi holds special significance as it is the current parliamentary seat of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While Priyanka Gandhi had hinted at the prospect of challenging PM Modi in the 2019 elections, she ultimately refrained from contesting and stated that her decision was in accordance with the party's directive.
If Priyanka Gandhi Vadra indeed chooses to contest from Varanasi in the upcoming elections, it would undoubtedly intensify the electoral landscape in a constituency that has symbolized the Prime Minister's political stronghold.
As the political climate heats up in anticipation of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, these potential candidacies are expected to spark discussions and debates across the nation. The dynamics between these prominent political figures and the constituencies they aim to represent will be closely monitored, as the Congress party seeks to regain lost ground and reassert its presence in the national political spectrum.
