    Despite Losing Two Consecutive Elections For Congress, Why is Rana Goswami Inducted As Vice President Of Bjp?

    After resigning from the Congress party, Goswami joined the BJP on 1 March at the state headquarters in Guwahati. His is appointed as the vice president of BJP Assam on March 2.



    Digital Desk: Former Assam Congress working president Rana Goswami, who recently joined BJP, is inducted into BJP’s state committee as vice president. He is a two-time MLA from Jorhat and a full-time politician. He fought four elections and lost two in 2016 during the Modi wave, and the Himanta wave in 2021. He lost the election (2021) against BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami with more than 8 thousand votes.


    Despite getting a good turn of votes in his name, he lost two consecutive elections. In 2016, he got 55,571 votes, which is 42.48 per cent of the total polls (1,30,809). Again in 2021, he attracted 61,833 votes (total poll 1,39,896) accounting for 44.20 votes in the Jorhat assembly constituency. This shows his popularity in the constituency despite two consecutive losses.


    Personal Life: Rana Goswami was born on November 12, 1959. He is currently 65 years old. He is a father of a girl, and her name is  Jagreeti Goswami. His wife is a businesswoman, according to the affidavit submitted to the Election Commission of India. He tied the knot with Jyoti Rekha Goswami on March 6, 1996. He is a permanent resident of Jorhat’s Toklai village.



    Criminal cases: He has 2 criminal cases in his name. One is related to False charges of offence made with intent to injure (IPC Section-211). Another charge related to Forgery for the purpose of cheating under IPC Section-468. 



    Net Worth: His net worth has been constantly increasing. He had surrendered assets worth 33 lacs in 2006 to 2 crore in 2021, as per the affidavit submitted to ECI. Till 2021, he has liabilities worth 63,73,910 (63+) lacs.


    Political Career: He has been in active politics since 2006. Until February 28, 2024, he serves as the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee's working president. On February 29, 2024, he became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party at Guwahati, where BJP State President Bhabesh Kalita and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma were present.


    He was elected twice, from the Jorhat constituency to the Assam Legislative Assembly: once in the 2006 election and again in 2011. 


    He was named Working President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee on July 24, 2021, and served in the position till he resigned from the Party. 


    Education: He holds a  Bachelor of Commerce (1981) from Jagannath Baruah College under Dibrugarh University, Assam.



    Joining BJP: After resigning from the Congress party, Goswami joined the BJP at the state headquarters in Guwahati, where he was accompanied by the party's Assam president, Bhabesh Kalita, and chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. State BJP appoints him as the vice president on 3 March 2024.
