24 dogs rescued meant for the meat market, rehabilitation underway

Digital Desk: Assam police rescued twenty-four dogs from the clench of illegal animal traffickers near the Assam-Nagaland area on December 15.

Reportedly, the rescued dogs were sheltered in Pulibor police station, after which a non-profit organization, ‘Just Be Friendly (JBF), has taken the initiative of taking care of them.

On December 16, a team of JBF reached Pulibor police station and started treating the dogs at the location itself. Following which the rescued dogs were shifted to JIRAW (JBF Integrated Resource Centre for Animal Welfare), Sonapur, for advanced treatment and shelter.

Since then, the team has been providing necessary treatment to the dogs; however, all the rescued 24 dogs were highly traumatized and in unhealthy condition due to detrimental conditions.

As per reports, ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebration, the demand for dog meat is high in Nagaland, so Assam is witnessing frequent cases of illegal trade of dogs, which has been prevailing for quite a time now.

On July 4, the Nagaland Government decided to ban dog meat citing ‘cruelty’ as the reason for banning the dog meat trade in Nagaland.

However, this decision did not go down well with many folks, especially those whose livelihood depended on this industry.

Furious about the decision, licensed dog traders went to the Gauhati High Court to challenge this decision. Moreover, NSCN-IM also slammed this decision by labeling it as an attempt to appease political celebrities.
