Digital Desk: The Assam Motor Workers Association (AMWA), a joint federation of motor worker and owner associations, has called for a 48-hour Chakka Bandh on March 28 and 29.
The AMWA has called a two-day strike in response to the state government’s accused “atrocities” against commercial motor vehicle owners and workers.
The AMWA claimed in a statement that the Assam government has failed to provide any kind of aid to commercial vehicle drivers and conductors who have faced severe economic difficulties over the last two years due to covid induced lockdown.
“While we were forced to take our vehicles off the road due to government-imposed lockdown, the same government is now bombarding us with fines and taxes on vehicles rather than giving us some relief,” the AMWA stated.
While a Motor Shramik Kalyan Asoni (motor workers welfare scheme) was introduced in the State Assembly, its regulations were yet to be implemented, the association claimed.
Without any financial help, the government is busy looting us to fill its cash reserves, an AMWA member said.
