    Assam has witness pre-poll violence ahead of Municipal Board Election 2022


    Digital Desk: Ahead of Assam Municipal Baord Election 2022, Chabua, Assam, has witnessed violence on Tuesday. Only four days are left for the state to hold the polls this year. Between these days, some conflicts could be witnessed in Dubrugarh's Chabua.

    Under the leadership of Lahoal Constituency MLA Vinod Hazarika, there has been a scenario reminiscent of a scene from a South Indian film in which individuals from various wards have been threatened with 10 to 12 cars.

    On Tuesday night, around 10-12 cars were noticed to create chaos in the region. MLA Bora has accused BJP of making disturbances and has compared MLA Vinod Hazarika with Bollywood's 'Sholay' movie character Gabbar.

    Moreover, it has been reported that at midnight, the election office of the AGP party was put into flame by some miscreants. This incident has taken place in Ward No-2. 

    This incident has created sensations among the resident of the Chabua region. 

    The State Election Commission of Assam declared earlier that elections to 80 municipal board would be held on March 6, 2022, following the Election Commission of India (ECI) norms and COVID-19 protocols.

    According to state election commissioner Alok Kumar, for the first time in Assam's civic election history, electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be utilised in all polling stations.

    "On March 6, voters will be polled, and the results will be counted on March 9." Nominations for the elections must be submitted by February 15, 2022, and applications will be scrutinised on February 17, 2022. By February 20, 2022, all nominations and candidacies must be withdrawn, according to the state election commissioner (SEC).

    According to the SEC, sufficient EVMs (5900 total) have been made available, and all procedures have been taken to ensure that the polls are run smoothly using these machines.

    "In the relevant areas of the municipal boards, the model code of conduct shall come into force with immediate effect," Kumar added.

    In the 80 municipal boards across the state, there are 977 wards or seats.

    "However, the election to the Silchar Municipal Board is still pending in the Gauhati High Court. Hence the election to the Silchar Municipal Board has yet to be notified." according to the SEC.
