Digital Desk: Two active cadres of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) voluntarily surrendered themselves to the police in Sonari, Charaideo district, Assam. The surrendered individuals have been identified as Nayan Patmaut, alias Bikash Axom, and Deepak Hatibarua, alias Dibya Axom. This surrender marks a commendable development in the relentless efforts of the Assam police to curb insurgency in the region.
Notably, along with turning themselves in, the duo handed over a cache of weaponry, including two grenades and two 9mm pistols, along with 25 live rounds. This gesture is being hailed as a testament to the success of the outreach and counter-insurgency initiatives led by Assam police under the guidance of Director General of Police (DGP) G P Singh.
This development comes on the heels of the recent detention of another active ULFA-I cadre, Achyutanand Neog, alias Niloy Asom, in connection to a grenade blast in Tinsukia district. Authorities revealed that Niloy Asom, along with his wife, had joined the banned insurgent group in 2022, with his wife still remaining within the ULFA-I ranks.
Assam DGP GP Singh had promised stringent action following the explosion, emphasizing the state's commitment to eradicating insurgency. The grenade blast occurred at an army camp in Kopahtoli, Dirak village, within the Kakopathar tehsil of Tinsukia district. Reportedly, two assailants on motorcycles targeted the army camp during ULFA-I protest day celebrations, resulting in a loud explosion. Fortunately, no security personnel were injured in the incident.
This series of events underscores the dynamic security situation in Assam and the crucial role played by the police force in tackling insurgencies. The voluntary surrender of ULFA-I cadres, coupled with decisive actions against those involved in violent activities, reflects a positive stride toward lasting peace and stability in the region.
