Digital Desk: Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi on Wednesday said that the state government had adopted a zero-tolerance policy for all types of crimes, including drug trafficking, crime against women and children, human trafficking, cattle smuggling, and cybercrime.
According to the Governor, 2,152 cases were filed under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act last year, 3,643 drug dealers were arrested, and large quantities of various drugs worth Rs 2.35 crore were recovered.
Assam adopts a zero-tolerance policy
He stated that Assam CID had developed a mobile app called “Drugs Free Assam” that allows the public to report information on drug-related offences to the police from anywhere to make Assam a drug-free state.
“Four Karbi militant outfits had signed memorandums of settlement with the Central and state governments in September last year, while a large number of extremists belonging to five groups had surrendered to the government on the occasion of the 73rd Republic Day celebrations, unfurling the national flag and taking salute of the security contingent at the Veterinary field, Khanapara.” the Governor said.
He added that 14 hardline militants were killed in different clashes with security forces last year, including a wanted ULFA-I leader.
“Two freshly created Bodo militant groups were also neutralized after the cadres of the group surrendered before the authorities.” he said.
Further, the Governor stated that the current government took a few significant steps shortly after taking office (in May last year) to expedite and effectively implement the Assam Accord.
In response to the inter-state issues between the northeastern states, the Governor stated that Assam and Nagaland agreed on July 31 last year to withdraw armed police personnel from disputed areas, resulting in the restoration of normalcy along the border.
Six regional committees led by ministers from both states were formed to resolve the issue of the 12 disputed areas of the Assam-Meghalaya border, and the committees have already submitted their reports for six areas of difference to the chief ministers of both the states during the first phase, according to the Governor.
He stated that following the tragic incident on July 26 last year (in which six Assam police officers were killed), Assam and Mizoram signed a joint resolution on August 5 in Aizawl, following which all efforts are being made to normalize traffic movement between the two states. On November 25, a chief minister’s level meeting was conducted in New Delhi.
In terms of education, the Governor stated that new engineering colleges have opened in Golaghat and Dhemaji and the construction of six new engineering colleges in Sualkuchi, Bihali, Bongaigaon, Samaguri, Nalbari, and Udalguri, as well as polytechnics colleges in Majuli and Tingkhong.
He stated that six government model colleges had been established and the development of nine Women Degree Colleges in Assam’s minority districts.
He added that construction of 119 high schools for tea garden areas in Assam has begun, with four already completed, and that construction of 10 law colleges and 21 model residential schools in minority-concentrated areas of Assam is currently underway.
