Assam earns a milestone, records lowest rhino poaching rate in last 21 years

Digital Desk:  Assam has reached a milestone by recording the lowest rate of rhino poaching in the last 21 years. Announcing the great achievement, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the forest officials for their contribution.

Assam CM Sarma took to his Twitter and made an admirable post. The post read, "It's commendable that in 2021, no. of rhinos lost to poaching was lowest in 21 yrs."

It moreover noted, "A huge milestone in our efforts to eliminate the menace of poaching from our state Kudos to our Forest Guards & officials of @kaziranga_ for their sincere efforts to protect Assam's beloved icon."

Last year, on World Rhino Day, Assam CM Sarma burned around 2479 rhino horns collected over the years from poachers. This event was organized to transmit a message that the rhino horn possesses no medicinal value.

The ceremony was a "milestone towards rhino conservation" desired at "busting myths about rhino horns." MK Yadava, Chief Wildlife Warden, Assam, stated, "It's a loud and clear message to the poachers and smugglers that such items have no value."

During the event, Assam's chief minister stated, "Poaching will not be tolerated anymore, and poachers have also understood that the present government is very tough. In a cabinet meeting last week, the Assam government decided to destroy the rhino horns recovered from the natural death of rhinos, poachers, and smugglers to bust the myth around rhino horns that they possess high medicinal value."

Marking his words, Sarma has proudly shared the news that Assam recorded the lowest rate of Rhino poaching for the first time in 21 years. This achievement includes the hard work and proper duty execution of forest officials and guards of the national reserves in the state.

Poaching has always been a severe threat to wildlife. It is the one of the most important reasons for the decline in the population of rhinos. However, Assam government's initiative to safeguard rhinos is praiseworthy.
