Digital Desk: Conrad K Sangma, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, was chosen unopposed as the National Peoples' Party's (NPP) national president on Tuesday.
Additionally, Thomas Sangma, who is facing rape allegations, was elected as the NPP's national general secretary without opposition.
After being re-elected as the party president, Conrad Sangma tweeted, "I am humbled and grateful to be re-elected as National President of the National People’s Party. Thank all our party members for reaffirming their trust in my leadership. Each member has a significant role to play. We are stronger together."
Conrad also unveiled the NPP calendar for 2022, which commemorates the 75th birth anniversary of his late father and veteran public activist Purno A Sangma, who was also a speaker of the Lok Sabha.
Meanwhile, NPP’s national spokesperson, Abhaya Kashyap, stated, "As there were no contenders for both positions, so, the candidates were declared as elected by the returning officer."
When asked about the party’s decision to re-elect a rape accused MLA as its general secretary, Kashyap said, "A person is not guilty unless the court declares him so, I am not going to say anything. This forum's mandate is not to do so."
In June of last year, Thomas Sangma, a former Rajya Sabha MP, was accused of raping a woman here on multiple occasions. In this regard, an FIR was filed against Thomas and the matter is before the court.
