Demow teacher fails to use RIIMS app, commits suicide

Demow: A primary school teacher was found dead by hanging inside the classroom after he failed to operate the government-prescribed RIIMS app. The teacher was the headmaster of a primary school in Demow.

The state government had issued an order to all schools, making the usage of the RIIMS app mandatory for all teaching staff.

The RIIMS app is an artificial intelligence (ASI) based mobile application that helps to monitor the attendance of the teachers. The mobile application also helped maintain the student as well the teacher’s databases.

The deceased teacher has been identified as Kali Prasad Chetia. He was reportedly the headmaster of Lakhimipathar Primary School in Demow.

The deceased teacher had earlier complained that he was unable to operate the mobile app and he was disturbed as his salary would be deducted if he failed to install and use the app.

Notably, the government had earlier stated in one of its notices that failing to install the application would result in the deduction of salaries.

The teaching staff of the primary school doubt, this might have been the reason behind Chetia taking the extreme step.

Taking a strong stand against the government’s order of installing RIIMS app, the Sadou Asom Sanmilita Siksha Mancha, an umbrella organization of 10 teachers’ organizations refused to install the app.

The teachers’ organization had even submitted a memorandum in this regard to the Chief Secretary, Education Department and Government of Assam, taking umbrage at this order.

The teachers’ had expressed concerns regarding the app, stating in the memorandum that the installation of the app, will be an infringement into their private space.
