Evictions will continue; will not allow encroachers to take over government land: CM Sarma

Guwahati: Addressing the media persons today on the violent incident of Dholpur in Darrang district, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the eviction drive will continue as planned and will resume again after the situation comes under normalcy.

“We had decided on giving 6 bighas of land to the landless residents of Dholpur, after a meet with the AAMSU President. Even when AAMSU accepted the deal, how come this situation took place?” said CM Sarma. “Obviously, a third party is involved in the entire incident. And I would never allow any third party to encroach over government land,” added CM Sarma.

Condemning the photographer's action, CM Sarma said that the clip of the alleged incident is barely few minutes. Hence, calling the BJP as Talibani or even the entire eviction drive as a Talibani rule is completely unacceptable.

"I would request to those slamming us, to come, and sit with me and watch the entire video, instead of concluding the entire incident, by watching just few seconds of the purported clip,"said CM Sarma.

Asserting the stance that the eviction drive will continue, CM Sarma stated that, "I will never allow any outsider to take over Dholpur Shiva temple area. Will you allow anyone to encroach upon Kamakhya Devalaya? I won't. What has been decided, shall continue as planned. There have been such instances before as well. How come suddenly within one night, thousands gathered at the place? The decision was taken to demolish 60 houses. How come more ten thousand people arrived at Dholpur within one night? questioned CM Sarma.

Around two people have been reported dead while several seriously injured in the violent Dholpur eviction incident that took place yesterday afternoon.

In view of the firing incident that occurred between the civilians and police on Thursday evening during a protest against the eviction drive in Dholpur village under Sipajhar revenue circle, the Home and Political departments of the state government have decided to institute an inquiry into the matter. The inquiry will be conducted under the chairmanship of a retired judge of Gauhati High Court.
