Former Congress leader Sushanta Borgohain to join BJP

Guwahati: Former Congress leader Sushanta Borgohain will be joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday. The two-time Congress legislator from Thowra constituency Borgohain submitted his resignation letter to the APCC President Bhupen Borah on Saturday.

On Saturday, the Congress party wrote a letter to the speaker of the State Assembly Biswajit Daimary, citing him to disqualify Borgohain as an MLA under the anti-defection law after he resigned from the party.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Debabrata Saikia appealed to the speaker to take the necessary action as per the Constitution’s 10th schedule and disqualify him.

Accepting Borgohain’s resignation letter, Assam Congress wrote on Twitter, “Hon'ble Assam PCC President Shri @BhupenKBorah has accepted the resignation of Shri Sushanta Borgohain from the primary membership of Congress Party.”

After, Borgohain's exit from the Congress party, its strength in the 126-member comes down to 27. Earlier, on June 18, former Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, along with Guwahati District President Jury Sharma, resigned from the Congress party and joined the BJP. Moreover, on July 6, Rajib Lochan Pegu, a minister in Tarun Gogoi’s cabinet, quits from the president post of the Majuli district unit of Congress.

Notably, from past few months Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has been witnessing 'internal discord' with many resigning from the party and joining the saffron party.
