Digital Desk: A 60-year-old man died by suicide in Morigaon district, where he was defending a lawsuit at a Foreigners Tribunal despite his name appearing in the National Register of Citizens (NRC), officials informed.
Reportedly, the deceased Manik Das family of Borkhal village said that he committed suicide due to “frustration and mental suffering” he endured while attending the Tribunal’s procedures to prove his Indian citizenship.
According to the police, the deceased had been missing since Sunday, after which his body was discovered hanging from a tree on a hillock near his home on Tuesday evening.
“It appears to be a suicide case at first glance the body was sent for postmortem and after its report we can confirm about it.” Police official said.
The deceased’s family claimed that he was depressed due to the case filed against him at Morigaon’s Foreigners’ Tribunal-2.
“The case has been ongoing for a long time. We’re not sure why the cops served him with notice and filed a case against him. The NRC listed my father’s name. He was irritated and suffering from mental anguish as a result of the entire process.” the deceased minor daughter stated.
Moreover, the daughter also claims that Das possessed all acceptable legal identity documents in his name, including a PAN card, Aadhaar card, and land records.
On the other hand, Morigaon, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Border) D R Bora, stated that family problems may have prompted Das to take such drastic steps.
“The suspected suicide should not be linked to the FT case. Household troubles could be the reason of suicide.” Borasaid.
Further, Bora claimed that only a notice was issued against Das, and no complaint was filed against any family member in compliance with the Gauhati High Court’s instructions.
Reportedly, the case against Das was filed in 2004 with the Tribunal.
