Digital Desk: The Asia Cup is facing a possible venue change as the Super Four games and the much-anticipated final may be shifted from Colombo to the southern district of Hambantota, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) sources revealed on Tuesday. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is expected to make an official announcement later today. This decision comes in response to the persistent heavy rains affecting the capital city, Colombo, and the central town of Kandy, disrupting the tournament's schedule.
Indian cricket fans, in particular, have had a disappointing experience as both of India's matches have been heavily affected by rain. The highly anticipated clash between India and Pakistan at the Pallekele stadium in Kandy was called off after just one inning due to an incessant downpour last Saturday. Furthermore, India's match against Nepal on Monday was also truncated due to adverse weather conditions.
In light of these weather-related disruptions, sources have revealed that broadcast operators and local communication service providers have been instructed to relocate their facilities to Hambantota. This move aims to minimize the risk of further disruptions and ensure the successful completion of the tournament. Hambantota, situated in the dry zone of Sri Lanka, has recently experienced a drought, making it a more favorable option.

If the proposed venue change takes place, all five Super Four games and the final, originally scheduled to be held at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, will now likely take place in Hambantota. It's worth noting that Hambantota's Rajapaksa Stadium was not part of the original Asia Cup schedule. The last One Day International (ODI) hosted there occurred in August, when Afghanistan played against Pakistan in the second game of a three-match series.
As a precautionary measure, given the uncertain weather conditions, there is also a proposal to introduce a reserve day for the next game between arch-rivals India and Pakistan, scheduled for Sunday. This measure aims to accommodate any weather-related interruptions and ensure that the crucial India-Pakistan clash proceeds without any undue interruptions.
Cricket enthusiasts and tournament organizers alike will be eagerly awaiting the ACC's official announcement regarding the potential relocation of these pivotal matches to Hambantota. While the move may be a logistical challenge, it is a necessary step to preserve the integrity and competitiveness of the Asia Cup in the face of unpredictable weather patterns.
