Digital Desk: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have announced their retirement from T20Is after India clinched a thrilling seven-run victory against South Africa in the final of the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup. Kohli made his declaration moments after being named Player of the Match for his outstanding 76 runs off 59 balls in his final T20I, which contributed significantly to India securing their second World T20 title. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma confirmed his decision during the post-match press conference.
"I've played my last T20 game today. There couldn't have been a better moment to bid farewell to this format. I've cherished every bit of it. My journey with Team India began through T20Is, and winning this World Cup was a dream come true," Rohit Sharma expressed emotionally.
Rohit, who debuted in T20Is during the inaugural T20 World Cup against England in 2007, amassed 4231 runs in 159 matches for India, establishing himself as the highest run-scorer in the format for his country. His tally includes five centuries, with a best of 121 not out against Afghanistan earlier this year, alongside 32 half-centuries. He also leaves as the most successful T20I captain with 50 victories, including Super Over and bowl-out triumphs, surpassing Pakistan's Babar Azam by two wins.
Earlier, after receiving the Player of the Match award, Kohli remarked, "This was my final T20 World Cup, and achieving this was our ultimate goal. Sometimes you struggle to score runs, and then something like this happens—God is great. It was a now-or-never situation, and we wanted to lift that cup."
"Yes, I have announced my retirement from T20Is. It was something that was known and was going to happen regardless of the outcome today," Kohli added. "It's time for the younger generation to take the T20 game forward. Winning an ICC tournament has been a long wait for us. Someone like Rohit, who has played nine T20 World Cups, and myself with six, we've waited for this moment."
