Lausanne: Former Indian athlete Anju Bobby George has been conferred with ‘Woman of the Year’ by ‘World Athletics’ for her efforts to advance India’s sports by grooming talents and advocating gender equality.
Anju, the former international long jump star who won a bronze medal in the World Championships in the 2003 edition, was named in the ‘World Athletics’ annual awards night on Wednesday.
The World Athletics, in a release, said, “The former international long jump star from India is still actively involved in the sport. In 2016 she opened a training academy for young girls, which has already helped produce a world U20 medalist.”

44-year-old Anju is still actively involved in the sport. She is a Senior Vice President of the Indian Athletics Federation, who mentors school girls for future leadership positions within the sport.
Expressing happiness, Anju Tweeted, “Truly humbled and honoured to be awarded Woman of the Year by @WorldAthleticsThere is no better feeling than to wake up everyday and give back to the sport, allowing it to enable and empower young girls! Thank you for recognizing my efforts.”
Olympics champions Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica and Karsten Warholm of Norway were also named the World Athletics of the year at the World Athletics Awards 2021 ceremony, held virtually on Wednesday night.
World athletics is the international governing body for the sports of athletics is in charge of the standardization of rules and regulations for the sports, certification of athletics facilities, recognition and management of world records, and the organization and sanctioning of athletics competitions, including the World Athletics Championships.
