Digital Desk: Roger Binny, the highest wicket-taker in India's winning 1983 tournament, was unopposedly chosen as the 36th Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday in Mumbai. Binny replaced former India captain Sourav Ganguly, whose three-year tenure as the board chief came to an end. Ganguly will now contest for the Cricket Association of Bengal's top post.
The other BCCI office-bearers, who were elected unanimously, include secretary Jay Shah, Ashish Shelar (treasurer), Rajeev Shukla (vice-president) and Devajit Saikia (joint secretary). Arun Dhumal, the outgoing treasurer, will take over as IPL chairman as Birjesh Patel will turn 70 next month.
The election of the new team of officeholders was a formality since everyone was chosen without opposition.
Binny, who represented India in 27 Tests and 72 ODIs, has also served as a member of the national selection committee.
The right-arm medium pacer, who also batted down the order, is best known for his World Cup performance in 1983. Binny ended the competition as the tournament's highest wicket-taker with 18 and played an important role in the Kapil Dev-led Indian team winning their first world title.
However, there was no discussion of the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairmanship. At the board meeting in Melbourne next month, the new ICC chairman will be chosen. "As far as India's representative to the ICC is concerned, it will be decided by the office-bearers. There was no discussion on the ICC chairmanship. Only matters on the agenda were discussed," a state unit official who attended the AGM told PTI.
With the nomination date for the ICC chairmanship approaching on October 20, the BCCI is unlikely to present its own candidate.
