Digital Desk: Ahead of Valentine's Day, the Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy has started a one-of-a-kind initiative in which you can name a cockroach after an ex-lover, boss, or even a relative you were disgruntled with to find solace. Although it may seem strange, this is a chance for you to express your feelings.
The name-a-roach campaign allows people to name a cockroach in someone's honour for a minimum contribution of $25. (Rs 1507). However, the wildlife conservancy has said clearly that there are naming restrictions and that profanity is strictly prohibited.
People will also get a digital certificate with the roach's name on it, as well as a donation tax receipt.
''Roses are red; violets are blue... Is there someone in your life that's bugging you? Give them goosebumps by naming a cockroach in their honour this Valentine's Day," wrote the Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy in Tweet.
Moreover, the zoo also added a disclaimer on their website, "The Toronto Zoo and the Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy respect all creatures - big and small. Cockroaches play a very integral ecological role in their rainforest homes by helping to decompose forest litter and animal faecal matter and are, in turn, food for many other animals. Despite their hair-raising reputation, cockroaches undeniably play a vital role in the sustainability of plant and animal habitats.''
The campaign has generated mixed reactions from the users. "Omg, I love this!" one user wrote. "Brilliant idea! Please keep us updated with the top10 names you get! Thx," another user wrote. While some netizens criticising the idea wrote, "How disgusting," one netizen wrote. "What the hell are you people thinking about. You're just adding to the general lack of respect that grows by the day in our society. Whoever came up with this and whoever approved it should be out on the street on their ass!" another user wrote.
