Digital Desk: China reiterated its support for dialogue to settle the situation in Ukraine on Thursday, but declined to characterise Russia's activities in the eastern European country a "invasion," instead of criticising the US and its allies for exacerbating the issue.
"China is closely monitoring the latest developments," Hua said on Thursday, adding, "We continue to hope that the parties involved will not close the door to peace and will instead engage in dialogue and consultation to prevent the situation from escalating further."
China has blamed the US and its western allies in recent weeks for “hyping up” the problem, with Hua noting at an earlier briefing on Wednesday that the US was “adding fuel to the fire”.
China's official media has continued to refer to Russia's full-throttle attack on Ukraine as a "special military operation," not an "invasion" a phrase used by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Zhang Jun, China's UN ambassador, urged all parties involved in the issue to exercise restraint and prevent further escalation.
“China believes that the door to a peaceful solution to the Ukraine issue has not been completely closed and should not be closed. At present, to avoid intensifying conflicts, China will continue to promote peace and talks in its own way,” Zhang was quoted by state-controlled media as saying.
China has previously harshly criticised the restrictions imposed by Western countries on Russia, describing them as "illegal unilateral measures."
According to her, the Chinese government believes that imposing sanctions has never been a fundamental and effective way to solve problems.
