Digital Desk: Dog-loving Bidens have finally gotten a cat, as promised by the White House. According to a representative for Jill Biden, Willow, the political pussycat, is a short-haired tabby. The first lady's photos on Twitter showed the gray-and-white striped pet wandering the presidential residence's red-carpeted majesty.
In these days of tension with Russia, surging inflation, and a stubborn, if retreating, Covid-19 outbreak, the White House might need some sweet, even cuddly Friday news.
"We're waiting for a bad news day," Press Secretary Jen Psaki joked back in June about going through with the long-expected cat plan. "If you see a tail wagging coming out of the briefing room, you'll know something bad is about to happen."
Willow is a farm cat from Pennsylvania known for tight presidential elections, and she made her first appearance in 2020 when she leapt onto a stage where the future first lady was campaigning.
"Willow made quite an impression on Dr Biden," Michael LaRosa, the first lady's press secretary, said.
"Seeing their immediate bond, the owner of the farm knew that Willow belonged with Dr Biden."
LaRosa said, "Willow is settling into the White House with her favorite toys, treats, and plenty of room to smell and explore."
Willow didn't respond to queries about her capacity to cross the partisan divide with dogs, but Washington won't have to wait long to find out: the dog-loving Bidens recently adopted a new German Shepherd puppy named Commander.
Because of a number of biting incidents involving White House workers, the Bidens used to have two adult German Shepherds, but one, Champ, died last year and the other, Major, was moved away to live with family friends.
Indeed, the White House has a long and illustrious history as a pro-dog residence. More than 100 dogs have walked and sniffed the halls of the White House since George Washington's time.
