Magnitude of 3.6 jolts Nepal again; aftershocks after 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Jajarkot leave Death toll count to 157

The dead toll from the Nepal earthquake climbed to 157 on Saturday evening, as rescuers continued to explore mountain settlements...

Digital Desk: During the early hours of Sunday, Nepal witnessed another tremor with a magnitude of 3.6.

The earthquake occurred at 04:38:20 (IST), reached a depth of 10 kilometres, and had its epicentre 169 miles northwest of Kathmandu.

"Earthquake of Magnitude: 3.6, Occurred on 05-11-2023, 04:38:20 IST, Lat: 28.63 & Long: 83.94, Depth: 10 Km, Location: 169 km NW of Kathmandu, Nepal," the National Disaster Services (NCS) tweeted.

The death toll from the Nepal earthquake climbed to 157 on Saturday evening, as rescuers continued to explore mountain settlements. Late Friday, November 3, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck Nepal. Officials predicted that the death toll would grow, given that communications were disrupted in several areas.

On Saturday, rescue workers in Nepal began digging with their bare hands through the wreckage of fallen houses in search of survivors after the country's deadliest earthquake in eight years killed 157 people and rattled buildings as far away as New Delhi.

Officials fear the death toll will grow because first responders just arrived in the steep area around the epicentre, about 500 kilometres west of Kathmandu, early Saturday and began hunting for survivors.

Earthquakes that strike Nepal influence the Gangetic plains because the region's soft soil amplifies seismic energy originating in the Himalayan belt, according to seismologists.

While seismologists have warned that consecutive earthquakes in the western Nepal Himalayan region anticipate larger seismic shocks, an examination of the preliminary reports published by the NCS depicts a geographical picture of the parts of India which have suffered these Nepal quakes and are thus vulnerable to them.
