Digital Desk: Neel Acharya, an Indian student at Purdue University in the US state of Indiana, has been officially declared dead, officials said on Tuesday.

Acharya, a double major at Purdue University's John Martinson Honors College in computer science and data science, was reported missing on social media on Sunday.

The Exponent reported that Acharya's passing was announced to staff and students in an email sent on Monday by interim computer science department CS head Chris Clifton.

"It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of our students, Neel Acharya, has passed away," The Exponent quoted Clifton.

"My condolences go out to his friends, family, and all affected," it stated.
Later in an interview with The Exponent, Clifton claimed to have received an email confirming Acharya's demise from the Office of the Dean of Students.

"A deceased person was found that matched Neel's description and had Neel's ID on (him)," he stated.

Gauri Acharya, Acharya's mother, asked for help in finding her son, who had gone missing on January 28 at 12:30 (local time), in a post on X earlier on Monday.

Taking to X, she wrote, "Our son Neel Acharya has been missing since yesterday Jan 28 and he is studying at Purdue University in the US. He was last seen by the Uber driver who dropped him off at Purdue University. We are looking for any information on him. Please help us if you know anything.”

Responding to her X post, India's Consulate General in Chicago stated, "(The) Consulate is in touch with Purdue University authorities and also with Neel’s family. Consulate will extend all possible support and help".
