Digital Desk: Ukraine filed a petition against Russia before the United Nations' highest court, accusing Moscow of preparing genocide and requesting that the court act to stop the invasion and require Russia to pay reparations.
The petition, filed on Sunday, also requests that the International Court of Justice, located in The Hague, provide "provisional remedies," forcing Moscow to "immediately cease the military operations" began on February 24.
According to the argument, Russia initiated its invasion of Ukraine on false claims of genocide in the eastern Ukrainian areas of Luhansk and Donetsk and is currently plotting genocidal crimes in Ukraine.
Ukraine "emphatically denies that genocide happened in the eastern regions" and says it filed the case "to establish that Russia has no lawful basis to take action in and against Ukraine for the purpose of preventing and punishing any purported genocide," the court said in a statement.
The court will schedule a hearing soon to hear the provisional measures request.
Unlike the International Criminal Court, which is also situated in The Hague and holds people legally liable for offences such as war crimes and crimes against humanity, the court hears disputes between governments on legal issues.
