Hollywood Burns: Can the Oscars Survive This Crisis?
The Oscar awards ceremony is under the verge of cancellation due to devastating Los Angeles wildfire…
Digital Desk: As wildfires rage across Los Angeles, it cast a dark shadow over Hollywood and its most famous event. The devastating blazes have caused a heavy toll of lives, homes and jobs and livelihoods and even compelled the change in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

In the wake of the crisis, the Academy has rescheduled the announcement of the nominee list for January 19th, 2025 and suspended the annual nominee luncheons. To further help the industry members that were affected by the fires, the nominations’ voting window is also extended. However, the following disruptions have not stopped the Oscars from being rescheduled and  to be held on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang have openly declared willingness to build on the upcoming events hoping that through them the industry will be brought together by the disasters saying, ‘We are heartbroken for the fires to be affecting the industry in this way but we want to cope with the situation’.

But with the wildfires intensifying, there’s still a chance of the Oscars not happening for the first time in 96 years. Currently, firefighters fight the flames in the region, which have burnt, federal property, celebrities’ homes, and vices versa leaving the region in trauma.

Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, and Steven Spielberg are among the Oscars 2025 committee members who spoke with the organizers to discuss arrangements, protection and safety. The Academy has its eyes on the current conditions and may need to contemplate on certain hard decisions when the situation worsens.
For now, the Oscars stand as a symbol  of hope and success alongside moments when the community has had to face difficulties and was not happy about it. But for now uncertainty persists and the Academy will continue to stand for unity and hope.
