Digital Desk: The tradition of consuming cocoa is as old as people, and, to commemorate National Cocoa Day, which is observed on December 13th, it’s high time to try a warm cup of cocoa.
The Origins of Cocoa:-
It has been more than two millennia since people have been drinking cocoa. It emerged that Mayans invented the first chocolate beverage, and by 1400 AD, cocoa had turned out to be an important staple for the Aztecs. It was popularized in Europe by the explorers from the New World, where the drink was transformed particularly. The earliest recorded use of hot cocoa was as a tonic capable of curing everything from stomach diseases to everything else not necessarily modern up to the 19th century.
It is also important to mention that original cocoa beverages in any way looked like today’s well-known chocolate sweets. When sugar was not available in early recipes, the flavors used were vanilla and chili. These drinks were consumed at different temperatures, and, in many cases, they were conspicuous by their bitter taste; Spanish people having a hard time taking to the new beverage.
The Evolution of Cocoa:-
The expedition of cocoa in Europe led to the transformation of the fluid into a beverage that was meant only for the royalty. In 1828, coated sugar lozenges were developed, leading to the formation of chocolate bars and more recent powdered instant hot chocolate. Swiss Miss, the brand of cocoa, introduced one of the convenient forms in the fifties—the powdered form of the hot cocoa mix, which was invented by Charles Sanna with the help of his own children.
Hot Cocoa vs. Hot Chocolate:-
As a matter of fact, hot cocoa and hot chocolate are different even if people use these two terms frequently interchangeably. Hot cocoa is a traditional drink made from cocoa powder, sugar, and milk or water, which actually makes it less creamy and less chocolatey than cocoa. Drinking chocolate—hot chocolate—is made from melted chocolate, thereby imparting greater cocoa-butter richness.
Health Benefits
of Cocoa:-
It contains a rich source of antioxidants that are likely to prevent cancer and maintain healthy blood vessels or arteries. These reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, fight off arterial degeneration, and support digestion besides its taste, making cocoa as an apple beyond taste.
On this National Cocoa Day, let us celebrate this warm winter drink and its history and many advantages.
