Digital Desk: According to the report by UN Women and UNODC, some 140 women and girls in average were killed by their intimate partners or other family members each day in 2023. Around the world, 51,100 women and girls were killed in this most lethal type of gender-based violence, an increase from 48,800 the previous year. This, the agencies said, was due to enhanced reporting rather than a rise in violence.
The report came out on the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and emphatically asserts that the problem does not respect geographical boundaries. Feminization of domestic violence means that homes themselves, where people should feel most protected, are the most lethal for women and girls.
Thus, Africa experienced the largest quantity of victims—21,700 people killed in 2023—and the greatest density, namely 2.9 victims per 100,000 population. The Americas 1.6/100,000, Oceania 1.5/100,000, Asia has the lowest number of 0.8/100,000, and Europe 0.6/100,000 all displayed similar trends.
In Europe and the Americas, most of the women and girls, accounting for 60 percent of the 85, 000 female murder victims in 2023, were murdered by their intimate partners. These killings are still happening at an alarming rate regardless of global prevention; thus, getting to the the root of the problem is desirable.
It is 140 women here who die at the hands of their intimate partners or families daily. Women and girls are not safe until justice and protection are everyone’s rights.
