Health benefits of dark chocolate may not be as good as we think; Here's why
Consumer Reports detected unsafe amounts of heavy metals in dark chocolate in research...

Digital Desk: When we desire to prioritize our physical well-being, we make a choice and often opt for dark chocolate, which is also becoming the favorite, and the reason to choose dark chocolate rightfully is because of its high antioxidants. But it may not be all good news. Hershey's has made news for having unsafe amounts of heavy metals including lead and cadmium in their dark chocolate bars.

So far, studies have shown that dark chocolate is healthier for you than other types of chocolate. A 2015 research published in Nutrition Reviews, a peer-reviewed magazine published by Oxford University Press, discovered that flavonoids in dark chocolate convey signals to our arteries to relax, lowering our blood pressure.

However, ConsumerReports.org found that when they tested the levels of arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury in 28 different types of dark chocolate bars from various brands, the results were not promising. Five of the 28 examined had lead and cadmium levels that were greater than what is deemed acceptable for eating for both cadmium and lead.

    Reason for being harmful-

Massive amounts of these metals are harmful to human ingestion. They can cause a variety of developmental issues in foetuses, so pregnant women are advised to avoid any traces of it in their diet. It is especially unsafe for young children since it might impair brain development and reduce IQ.

According to a study published in the journal Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety, chronic kidney damage can be caused by long-term cadmium exposure.

    What to do-

"Well, I'd say we have to understand that anything processed can never be healthy," says Nmami Agarwal, dietician and nutritionist. Whether it's chocolate or healthy meals. Chemicals or toxic additives are used when food is processed.

However, in today's world, it is impossible to avoid processed foods. So one mantra that I always repeat is that excess of anything is bad. Everything, whether it's an excess of processed foods or an excess of water, must be done in moderation."

She continues, "Going forward, the best way to check food safety and avoid processed food is to solve cravings naturally." We can satisfy our sweet needs with dates and honey. We can try nuts for magnesium. Find out what your desires are and sort them out organically by eliminating manufactured meals, and you'll be OK!"
