Digital Desk: Water constitutes 70 percent of the human body weight, making it an indispensable daily requirement, especially under the scorching sun when dehydration poses a significant risk. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recently issued comprehensive dietary guidelines, outlining what to consume, how much, and what to avoid across 17 chapters.
To counteract the loss of water and essential fluids through sweat and urine, it's vital to replenish them. According to the latest recommendations, the average healthy adult should aim for around eight glasses (approximately 2 liters) of water and other beverages daily. This intake may need adjustment during hot weather due to increased fluid loss through perspiration.
In terms of hydrating beverages, the new guidelines advocate for tender coconut water, citing its mineral content and energy value of 15 Kcal/100ml. However, individuals with conditions predisposing them to hyperkalemia, such as kidney and heart diseases, should steer clear of tender coconut.
Tender coconut water boasts several health benefits:
Hydration: Rich in electrolytes like potassium, sodium, magnesium, and calcium, tender coconut water aids in fluid replenishment, making it particularly beneficial post-exercise or in hot climates.
Nutrient-rich: Packed with essential vitamins (e.g., C, B-complex) and minerals (e.g., manganese, zinc), tender coconut water supports immune function, metabolism, and energy production.
Antioxidant Properties: Antioxidants in tender coconut water, including vitamin C and cytokinins, combat free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and lowering the risk of chronic diseases.
Digestive Health: With natural diuretic properties and dietary fiber, tender coconut water promotes digestion and prevents constipation. Bioactive enzymes like amylase, protease, and lipase aid in nutrient digestion and absorption.
Cardiovascular Health: Low in fat and cholesterol, tender coconut water is potassium-rich, supporting blood pressure regulation and overall heart health.
Despite its benefits, tender coconut water should complement rather than replace a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Individuals with specific health concerns or dietary needs should seek guidance from healthcare professionals before making significant dietary changes.
