World Mental Health Day was first observed in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health, a non-governmental organisation established in 1948 in London.

Digital Desk: World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 every year.  In 1992, the World Federation for Mental Health started observing the day. Raising awareness of mental health concerns and mobilising support for mental health are the goals of World Mental Health Day.

The World Health Organization's (WHO) official website stated that "The Day gives a chance for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to discuss their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide."

Making mental health & well-being for all a global priority is the World Mental Health Day topic for this year.

An estimated one in eight persons worldwide was thought to be suffering from a mental illness prior to the epidemic. A worldwide mental health catastrophe was brought on by the pandemic.

According to estimates on the WHO website, "the increase in depression and anxiety disorders increased by more than 25% in the first year of the epidemic. The gap in treatment for mental health disorders has expanded at the same time that mental health services have been severely interrupted."

According to the WHO, World Mental Health Day aims to raise awareness about mental health and is a chance for people who have mental health conditions to come together to acknowledge progress in this area and speak out about what needs to be done to ensure that mental health & well-being become a global priority for everyone.

According to the WHO website, "We envision a society where mental health is cherished, promoted, and protected; where everyone has the same chance to enjoy mental health and to exercise their human rights; and where everyone can get the mental health care they need."
