Longest partial ‘Chandra Grahan’ to occur on November 19 after 580 years

New Delhi: After almost 580 years, the world will witness the longest partial lunar eclipse (Chandra Grahan) on November 19, 2021.

Experts say the eclipse will be visible from North America, South America, eastern Asia, Australia, the Pacific region, and Northeast India.

U.S. independent space agency, NASA earlier stated that a partial lunar eclipse is on the way. They added that the eclipse would take place overnight on November 18th and 19th.

This eclipse will occur when the Moon slips into Earth’s shadow for a couple of hours.

“The eclipse will be visible from any place where the Moon rises above the horizon. The moon should rise above throughout the eclipse. The time zone will decide when you can view the phenomenon. According to time zone, it’ll occur earlier or later in the evening for you,” stated NASA.

The phenomenon in India will be visible from two states. The states include Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The Director of Research and Academic at MP Birla Planetarium, Debiprosad Duari, shared the information.

The lunar eclipse will begin at 12.48 pm and finish at 4.17 pm. The eclipse duration will be 3 hours, 28 minutes and 24 seconds. This duration marks it be the longest in 580 years.

The astrophysicist stated that few areas of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh would observe the last fading moments of the eclipse. The fading minutes will be seen only after the moon rise.

The last time such partial eclipse occurred was on February 18, 1440. The maximum partial eclipse will be apparent at 2.34 pm. This will be seen as the Earth’s shadow will hide 97% of the Moon.

The last lunar eclipse occurred on July 27, 2018. The next lunar eclipse will be on May 16, 2022. However, it will not be visible from India.
