Majuli accident may repeat once again due to negligence of the department

Lakhimpur: The Majuli tragic incident may be repeated soon due to the “Inland Water Transport Department’s negligence in Lakhimpur.

Sources quoted that worn-out traditional boats continue to run in the ghats, risking the life of the commuters.

Complaints raised against the “Inland Water Transport Department’ by the commuters claimed that worn-out traditional boats including- “Machine boat” and “bhotbhoti” have been used by the concerned authority for boat services in the ghats.

Reportedly, boat services are being run by the Inland Water Transport department, Mising Autonomous Council, and Panchayats across 50 ghats in Lakhimpur

Recently, a traditional boat (bhotbhoti) carrying government flood relief materials, split into two parts due to its poor condition.

Raising concern against the inland water services, organizations like ‘All Assam Student Union’, ‘Koiborto Yuva Chatra Sanmilani’ staged protests in Lakhimpur.

Our source claimed that there were no facilities for tickets, life jackets, and the boats were old-style traditional boats ready to sink at any moment.

Inspecting the ghats, Lakhimpur District Administration IAS Sumit Sattawan said, “During a meeting with the boat owners, we have decided that the responsibilities of the passengers in a boat will be upon the drivers and boat owners.”

Further, the DC stated, “Today we have got a marine engine, the installation team is on the way, and the ongoing issue will solve within four days.
