New Delhi: As many as 185 persons belonging to various fields of art, culture, literature, history, etc have condemned the recent FIR against 49 eminent citizens of the country who wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As reported on Monday, they have also endorsed the open letter against mob lynching of Muslims, Dalits and other minorities by which an urgent action from the PM was sought in July this year.
The 185 civil society members said in a statement that writing an open letter to the Prime Minister of the country expressing concern about mob lynching cannot be called an act of sedition and hence lodging a complaint in this case is an act of harassing citizens and misusing the courts. The said FIR was lodged in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur on Thursday last after an order was passed by the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Lucknow on August 20, 2019 in response to a petition filed two months ago by an advocate.
Signatories of the statement include renowned historian Romila Thapar, writer K Satchidanandan, Nayantara Sahgal, Gayatri Spivak, Shoma A Chatterji, Jerry Pinto, Jeet Thayil, Harsh Mander, Ira Bhaskar, Moinak Biswas, poet Ashok Vajpeyi, actor Naseeruddin Shah, Moloyashree Hashmi, artist Vivan Sundaram and dancer Mallika Sarabhai among others.
