Chennai: On Monday evening, three professors were questioned by a special investigation team with regards to the suicide of Fathima Lateef, a humanities student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.
The name of the three professors were mentioned by Fathima in her suicide note. Fathima’s body was found in her hostel room on November 9 by her hostel mate Aleema Santhosh after her parents called up her friends to check on her.
It is crucial for the investigators to arrive at a conclusion as to what led Fathima to choose suicide as no reason has been provided by her in the note apart from mentioning that she misses her home, loves her parents a lot but not why the professors are to be blamed.
Fathima’s father alleged that a faculty member is responsible for his daughter’s death and will wait until Friday to see if any action is taken in the case. Two students have launched an indefinite fast in IIT Madras demanding an inquiry into the conduct of the faculty as sought by Fathima’s family.
