The order was given to all directors, faculty deans, and administrative leaders with instructions to inform the students and monitor adherence to the directive.
Digital Desk: Following receiving complaints from students, instructors, and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the Banaras Hindu University, popularly referred to as BHU, withdrew its order banning the celebration of Holi on campus.
The chief proctor of BHU issued an order on Saturday that read in part, "Regarding gathering at a public place to celebrate Holi.....Campus Form No. M.A.A.C./2022-2023/2326 issued on 28.02.2023 is being withdrawn in light of the response received through social media and other means of communication...everyone is expected to celebrate the festival of colours with due dignity in a cordial atmosphere."
The chief proctor of BHU issued a form on February 28 that made it clear that playing Holi or music in a public area on campus was against the law and that individuals who disobeyed the rule would face consequences.
The order was given to all directors, faculty deans, and administrative leaders with instructions to inform the students and monitor adherence to the directive.
By issuing a decree that restricted the celebration of the festival of colours, the university angered both students and faculty.
Also denouncing the decree was the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. An iftar during Ramadan was authorised by the university, according to Vinod Bansal, a VHP spokeswoman, but Holi festivities are now being rejected.
"Is this a Tughlaqi order or a circular? Has the Hindu Vishwavidyalaya in Kashi begun to resemble Jihadi Jamia? Holi is opposed by jihadis in Jamia, "Bansal posted something on Twitter.
"When the Vice Chancellor attends the Iftar feast at the Kashi Hindu University, he publishes a fatwa that forbids the celebration of Holi. Why? Is it unheard of to play music in Bhole's Kashi and its Shiksha Mandir? Holi is more than just a holiday; it also serves as a symbol of global social harmony "In a letter to Bansal, I demanded that the ban on Holi celebrations on campus grounds be lifted.
In the meantime, the head proctor of BHU told Aaj Tak/India Today that just three locations on the campus are public spaces: the hospital, the new Vishwanath temple, and the roads. This was after removing the order that forbade Holi from the university campus. Only in these three locations was the prior injunction prohibiting the celebration of Holi in effect.
"On the campus, there is Holi play. There is no issue with this, and we have not yet heard from any students who have complained.
Holi festivities must be held on the university campus because Kashi's Holi is so well known worldwide "the previous order was misinterpreted, the proctor continued.
