    Digital Desk: Two well-known Banaras products, Banarasi paan and Banarasi langda mango, have been given the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognizing their unique origin. The GI certification has also been given to the 'Adamchini' rice from the Chandauli region. On March 31, the GI Registry in Chennai certified 33 goods, including 10 from Uttar Pradesh and three from Varanasi. With the latest additions, Uttar Pradesh now has 45 GI products, 20 of which are from the Varanasi region. Currently, the GI Registry has issued GI tags to 441 Indian products and 34 foreign commodities.


    A GI designation has also been given to the renowned Ramnagar Bhanta (brinjal) from Varanasi, in addition to Banarasi Paan and Banarasi Langda mango.


    Padma Shri Rajni Kant, a well-known GI expert who enabled the certification of 20 of the 33 certified goods this year, thanked the Prime Minister, who is also Varanasi's MP, for his enthusiastic interest in promoting traditional GI goods.

    Kant stated that the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan is taking GI goods from local to global, and that the nation is showcasing its rich legacy all over the world through the recognition and safeguarding of its unique products through the GI tag.


    According to the GI Registry, newly certified products from Uttar Pradesh include Aligarh Tala, Bakharia Brassware, Banda Shazar Patthar Craft, Nagina Wood Craft, Pratapgarh Aonla, Hathras Hing, Ramnagar Bhanta, Muzaffarnagar Gur (jaggery), Banaras Langda Aam, and Banarasi Pan.


    NABARD AGM Anuj Kumar Singh stated that over 1,000 farmers will be registered and issued GI-authorised user certificates. He praised all farmers, producers, FPOs, and affiliated self-help groups on the certification of their products and announced that NABARD will start various schemes to promote and support these GI products. He added that financial organizations will collaborate in the development and promotion of these products.
