Digital Desk: Justice Rohit Deo, a Bombay High Court judge, resigned on Friday for personal reasons.
According to a lawyer, Justice Deo made the declaration in his courtroom in Nagpur, where the high court has a bench, saying that he could not compromise on self-respect.
Following the announcement, the matters listed before him for the day stood discharged.
Justice Deo was quoted as saying in the courtroom by the lawyer, "Those who are present in the court, I apologise to each and every one of you. You have been warned because I want you to get better. I'm sorry to inform you that I have submitted my resignation; you are all like family to me and I don't want to hurt anyone. Working against my self-respect is not an option. You people are hard workers."
Later, speaking to reporters, the judge stated that he resigned due to personal reasons and had sent his resignation letter to President of India.
In 2022, Justice Deo overturned former Delhi University professor GN Saibaba's life sentence in a case involving alleged Maoist affiliations and declared that the trial was invalid because there was no sanction in place under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Justice Deo further declared that the trial was invalid because there was no sanction in place under the UAPA.
Later, the Supreme Court stayed the decision and mandated that the Nagpur High Court bench rehear the case.
Earlier this week, Justice Deo blocked the implementation of a Maharashtra Government Resolution (order) from January 3 that gave the state the authority to drop legal actions brought by the revenue department against contractors working on the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway for illegally excavating minor minerals.
JusticeDeo was supposed to step down in December 2025 after being appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court in June 2017.
Before that, he was the Advocate General of Maharashtra in 2016.
