Digital Desk: Chief Justice UU Lalit retired on Monday and gave his farewell address in New Delhi. "It has been a wonderful journey," the Chief Justice stated.
In his farewell speech, the Chief Justice also stated, "I promised to shorten the listing process and expedite the hearing of new regular issues. To some extent, I have kept my commitments. We were able to dispose of 10,000 matters and clear another 13,000 which were in defect."
"The journey of 37 years in this court has been made possible and simpler as a result of everyone's support and the blessings of the elderly," the outgoing Chief Justice of India added.
CJI UU Lalit's successor, Justice DY Chandrachud, said at the SC Bar Association's farewell, "As your successor, I recognize that I must fill extremely large shoes, as you have elevated the bar for the Chief Justice. His commitment to public service has been reflected in Justice UU Lalit's career."
Justice DY Chandrachud will be appointed as India's 50th Chief Justice. His father, Justice YV Chandrachud, who was appointed to the position of CJI in 1978 and retired from it in 1985, has the longest tenure of seven years. They will be the only father-son duo to serve as Chief Justice of India.
During his tenure as a Supreme Court justice, Justice DY Chandrachud overruled two of his father's decisions. The verdicts concerned privacy rights and adultery.
After being appointed to the Bombay High Court in 2000, Justice DY Chandrachud served there for 13 years. After being named chief justice of the Allahabad High Court in 2013, Justice Chandrachud was promoted to the Supreme Court three years later.
