Digital Desk: India's third mission to the moon, Chandrayaan-3, took off successfully from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, on Friday afternoon. It will take more than a month for Chandrayaan-3 to land on the lunar surface. If the mission is successful, India will become the fourth nation to complete the task, after the United States, the former Soviet Union, and China.
What is the mission about?
The mission's goal is to accomplish what its predecessor could not- land softly on the lunar surface and explore it with a rover. A successful soft landing will make India the fourth country to accomplish the feat, joining the United States, Russia, and China. After launching into an orbit around the Earth at an altitude of 179 kilometers on Friday, the spacecraft will progressively boost its orbit in a series of maneuvers to escape Earth's gravity and slingshot towards the moon. After getting close to the moon, the spacecraft will need to be captured by its gravity. Once that happens, the lander, which carries the rover inside it, will separate from the propulsion module and start its powered descent.
