Digital Desk: On Wednesday, the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) hit back at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who took a swipe at the opposition coalition with his remarks that the British gave the country the name India.
Jairam Ramesh, general secretary of the Congress, tweeted that Sarma should inform Prime Minister Narendra Modi of this as his policies have names like "Skill India," "Start-up India," and "Digital India."
Sarma stated on Tuesday that the British named the country India and that the goal should be to free the country from "colonial legacies" in a jab at opposition parties over the name of their coalition, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).
Jairam Ramesh taking Twitter wrote, "Is the Assam CM having a surplus of sour grapes in his mouth? His new mentor, Mr. Modi, gave us Skill India, Start-up India and Digital India—all new names for ongoing programmers."
"He's (Modi) asked CMs of different states to work together as 'Team India'. He even made an appeal to Vote India!" he added.
"However, he (Sarma) throws a fit and claims that using the word India indicates 'colonial mentality' when 26 political parties call their alliance INDIA (Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance)!
"The Congress leader added, "He should go tell that to his Boss.
Ramesh also uploaded a previous Modi video in which he can be heard appealing to voters to "vote for India."
Yesterday, Sarma in a tweet said, "Our civilisational conflict is pivoted around India and Bharat. The British named our country as India. We must strive to free ourselves from colonial legacies.
Noting that the forefathers had fought for 'Bharat', he said, "We will continue to work for Bharat."
Taking to Twitter, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate also slammed Sarma and said, "Himanta, find a better tweet writer. This one makes you appear foolish. Your fight seems to begin with your geo location on your twitter bio ??"
26 opposition parties came together on Tuesday to form the INDIA grouping, with Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, declaring that the battle will be "between INDIA and Prime Minister Narendra Modi," setting the tone for their 2024 Lok Sabha campaign.
But on Wednesday, a day later, they decided on "Jeetega Bharat" as the slogan for the coalition that seeks to topple the BJP in the general election of 2024.
After deliberation until late last night, Jeetega Bharat (India shall win) was decided upon as the outcome. According to PTI, the tagline will probably be used in numerous regional languages.
The NCP's Clyde Crasto echoed the Congress when he remarked, "Himanta Biswa Sarma says 'British named our country India; we must free ourselves from colonial legacy'."
"So when is BJP changing its twitter handle?" he asked.
