New Delhi: Congress to observe 'Kisan Vijay Diwas' across the country today, to mark the Centre's announcement on Friday of the repeal of three contentious farm laws.

According to reports, the Congress leaders and party workers will visit the families of the over 700 farmers who died during the protest and will hold candle marches and rallies to pray for the departed souls.

In a letter to the party's state unit chiefs, Venugopal said, "The repeal of the three draconian farm laws is the victory of the farmers so, the Congress will observe 'Kisan Vijay Diwas' on November 20 in recognition of the consistent fight of the farmers against the government."

The decision comes after Rahul Gandhi, in an open letter to farmers, congratulated them on their victory and assured them of the party's support in their future struggle.

Moreover, Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi termed farmer's protest as 'Gandhian Agitation,' saying that it is a success of the willpower and struggle of 62 crore farmers.

Since November 26, last year, the farmers had been protesting against three contentious farm laws. The farmers wanted the government to roll back the three contentious farm laws – Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. They also demanded a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for their crops.

As per reports, the constitutional formalities to revoke the laws will be done in Parliament's winter session beginning from November 29.
