    Delhi Cabinet approves salary increment of the MLAs to Rs. 30,000 per month

    New Delhi: The Delhi Cabinet on Tuesday sanctioned the salary increment for the MLAs of Delhi as proposed by the Centre. With, this the salaries of the MLAs increased to Rs 30,000 per month, the Chief Minister Office (CMO) statement said.





    “The Delhi Cabinet today approves the Salaries and allowances of Ministers of Government of Delhi, (Amendment) Bill 2021 and MLAs/Speaker-Dy Speaker/Chief Whip/Leader of Opposition of Legislative Assembly of Delhi (Amendment) Bills 2021.” CMO, in a statement, said.





    Following Cabinet approval, the draft bill will be sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to approve before it is placed in the Delhi assembly.





    Approving the Centre’s proposed salary for the MLAs, Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal said that Delhi’s MLAs is the lowest-paid MLAs in India.





    The CMO said, “The Ministry of Home Affairs of the NDA-led central government limited the proposal of the Delhi government and carb the salary of the MLAs to only Rs 30,000.”





    “Delhi government had proposed a salary of Rs 54,000 for the MLAs, but the MHA limited it to 30,000. So now the salary plus allowances of the MLAs of Delhi has been restricted by the MHA TO Rs. 90,000.” It said.





    “Delhi’s MLAs salaries haven’t increased since 2011; the Delhi government had requested the MHA to increase the salary of the Delhi MLAs same as the MLAs of other states.” Statement added.





    According to the statement, the MLAs of the other states, which the BJP and Congress lead, receive around two times the amount Delhi MLAs get.





    Moreover, the statement said, “Several states led by BJP pay to their MLAs 1.5 to 2 times the salary and allowances proposed for Delhi MLAs - Uttarakhand (1.98L), Himachal Pradesh (1.9L), Haryana (1.55L), Bihar (1.3L). Other parties to pay their MLAs much higher, e.g. Congress in Rajasthan (1.42L) and YSR Congress in Telangana (2.5L).”
