According to reports, the accused has been charged with data theft, unauthorised access, and violation of privacy under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and many other parts of the Indian Penal Code.
This is not the first time such an incident has taken place, in 2021, a website claimed that over 150 million Indians' personal information had been leaked onto the dark web. Even then, the Health Ministry rejected the findings, claiming that information exchanged with CoWIN is secure. Someone likely took the same data that was flying around the web and created a Telegram bot to make it easily searchable.
The CoWIN data leak has renewed concerns about data security and privacy in the digital world. This incident serves as a clear reminder for governments and organisations to invest in strong cybersecurity measures and constantly upgrade their systems to prevent unauthorised access and data breaches.
In reaction to the incident, however, the Indian government has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the security and privacy of residents' data. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has announced that they are working closely with the relevant authorities to resolve the situation as soon as possible. They have also emphasised the importance of citizens remaining careful and alert with their data and reporting any suspicious activity.
A Telegram bot recently exposed phone numbers, Aadhaar numbers, Date of Birth (DoB), and other vital information of all users who used the CoWIN platform to receive immunisations.
According to sources, all of these facts were accessible with a simple Telegram search. The platform, on the other hand, was swift to shut down the bot. According to reports, the data was obtained through CoWIN, but the government rejected those claims and stated that the CoWIN gateway is safe.
