Delhi Riots: Scars stay fresh as families keep waiting for compensation
Digital Desk: It has been 2 years since violent riots erupted in Delhi, most notably in the northeastern part of the national capital, causing widespread upheaval and political turbulence. The Delhi riots wreaked havoc on many families and left a mark on the entire city.

According to federal government data, the Delhi riots resulted in the deaths of 53 people, with a large number of others being seriously hurt. In addition, many households in Delhi face significant financial hardships due to savage arson attacks that burned entire neighborhoods. For more than 48 hours, Delhi was engulfed in bloodshed.

The Delhi riots erupted in the northeastern part of the national capital, with multiple episodes of arson, bloodshed, and property destruction reported, with over 50 people killed. The Delhi riots lasted from February 23 to February 29.

Riots erupted in Delhi during the anti-CAA and anti-NRC demonstrations. A group of protesters had started a sit-in at the Jaffarabad metro station, impeding traffic. After some BJP supporters started a pro-CAA rally, anti-CAA protestors allegedly started throwing stones at the crowd.

The fight between the two teams lasted for 48 hours, following which security personnel and barricades were deployed across the nation's capital. The disturbances swiftly devolved into a religious conflict, with reports of Hindu and Muslim groups hitting one another.

A total of 53 people have been reported dead, with two-thirds of them being Muslims shot, repeatedly cut with repeated blows, or set on fire. Over a dozen Hindus, one police officer, and one intelligence officer were also dead.

Over the week following the riots, medical facilities remained crowded with injured people while several bodies were discovered in drains. In addition, several people were still missing by mid-March.

Following the cessation of the violence in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party introduced compensation for the victims' families. According to the Delhi government, families of those deceased would receive Rs 10 lakh in compensation, Rs 5 lakh for persons with permanent impairments, Rs 2 lakh for severe accidents, and Rs 20,000 for minor accidents.

According to media reports, even two years after the horrors of the Delhi riots, several families have stated that they have yet to get compensation for the loss of family members in the riots.
