Gujarat government schools to teach English from Class 1 instead of Class 3

From the new academic session beginning in June 2022, English will be taught in all state government schools beginning in Class 1.

Digital Desk: State education minister Jitu Vaghani said in the Gujarat Assembly on Thursday that English as a subject will be introduced in all state government schools from Class 1 in the next academic session beginning in June 2022.

English is currently taught in government schools, beginning with Class 3.

"Gujarati is mandatory and crucial, but English will be taught to pupils in Class 1 and 2," Vaghani said during a discussion on the Education budget on Thursday.

"We will introduce English as a subject in Class 1 in the following academic session, and it will move to Class 2 in June 2023," education secretary Vinod Rao said.

Gujarat has about 32,000 government primary schools (from kindergarten to eighth grade), with over 51 lakh kids enrolled.
