Digital Desk: Union Home Minister Amit Shah revealed today at a press conference that after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the new parliament building on May 28, he will also put a historic golden sceptre beside the Speaker's seat. The sceptre known as 'Sengol' was presented to the country's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, to commemorate the transfer of authority from the British to the Indians.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah was speaking at a news conference to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ninth year in office. "The new Parliament building was built in record time, and the Prime Minister will congratulate and honour the 60,000 workers who helped build it." "The new Parliament building demonstrates Prime Minister Modi's long-term vision," remarked Amit Shah.
In explaining the sengol's origins and significance, Shah stated that it was forgotten after 1047. "Then, in 1971, it was mentioned in a book by a Tamil scholar." It was mentioned by our government in 2021-22. "The 96-year-old Tamil scholar who was present in 1947 will be present again when it is installed in the new Parliament building," Amit Shah remarked.
"A historical occurrence is performing itself." Sengol is the Tamil word for it. It is historically significant and wealthy. It is tied to the country's tradition. Sengol is a cultural treasure. This incident occurred on August 14, 1947. This Sengol has performed an important historical function. However, it was not brought to our attention for many years. "On August 14, 1947, Nehru accepted it from the Britishers," Shah stated at the meeting.
He went on to say that whoever inherits Sengol is required to rule in a fair and just manner. It is extremely important in Indian culture, particularly Tamil culture. "Sengol has been influential since the Chola dynasty. This will be maintained in the future Parliament," he stated.
Shah continued to say that power transfer involves more than just a handshake or the signing of a document and that it must be linked to local customs while keeping modern demands in mind.
Importance of Sengol and connection with Jawaharlal Nehru-
During the Chola dynasty, the Sengol was very important during the king's coronation rites, and it represented the transfer of authority from one ruler to the next.
According to reports, during the deliberations about the symbolic transfer of power from British to Indian control, Viceroy Lord Mountbatten asked Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, about an appropriate ceremony to mark the occasion.
Nehru appealed to the eminent statesman C. Rajagopalachari, who offered a ritual rooted in the Chola dynasty's old history, in which power was transferred between monarchs when a high priest handed over a sceptre to a new king when he came to power.

The new Parliament building, according to the Home Minister, is a manifestation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision. He stated that during the inauguration, the Prime Minister will honour 7,000 workers (shram yogis). Shah stated that invitations to the inauguration of the new Parliament Building had been extended to all political parties, who were free to act as they saw fit.
In response to media inquiries, Mr Shah emphasised that the Sengol should not be associated with politics. "We want the administration to be run by the rule of law, and this will always remind us of that," he said.
At least 19 opposition parties, including the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Trinamool Congress, the Left, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and the Shiv Sena's Uddhav Thackeray faction, announced their decision to stay out of the event on Wednesday.
