Chandy Oommen broke his father's record of a 33,255-vote margin set by his father in the 2011 Assembly elections...
Digital Desk: Chandy Oommen of the opposition Congress-UDF defeated Jaick C. Thomas of the ruling LDF by a margin of 37,719 votes on Friday, retaining the Puthuppally assembly seat for the opposition party. The assembly seat held by his late father, the former chief minister of Kerala, Oommen Chandy, was won by the Congress candidate with the biggest victory margin in history.
Chandy Oommen broke his father's record of a 33,255-vote margin set by his father in the 2011 Assembly elections.
However, the BJP's candidate, district chief Ligin Lal, will lose his deposit after failing to win one-sixth of the vote, according to the Onmanorama news website. Only 6,558 votes, or 5% of the total 1,30,563 votes cast, went to the BJP candidate. The party's vote percentage decreased from the 5.57 percent it received in 2011. The party had its best performance in the Puthuppaly seat in 2016 when it received nearly 12% of the vote share (15,993 votes).
Following its win, the Congress party stated that the outcome of the election was a victory against the LDF's "misrule" and a 100 percent political victory for Congress.
In contrast to Jaick C. Thomas, the current LDF candidate and Oommen Chandy's son, who has a clear advantage since the first round, Thomas has never been ahead in any rounds.
Even in its strongholds, the CPI(M)-led LDF lost ground, and when the votes were finally counted, BJP candidate Lijin Lal was nowhere to be seen in the picture.
The national outreach cell of the Youth Congress is currently led by 37-year-old Chandy Oommen, who has a good chance of breaking his father's record margin of 33,255 votes in the district.
The results of the byelection, which took place a few months before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, are considered a major setback for the ruling CPI(M), which has been accused of corruption and nepotism by the BJP and the opposition Congress-led UDF.
The bypoll was held following Oommen Chandy's death and the election was conducted on September 5.
